Poker tips, strategy and advice about playing poker
online: below is a piece of correspondence between myself and a friend I made in
the poker rooms;
what works excellently for me is
simply staying in.
Sounds crazy/ too simple
.... perhaps; but that is my secret. Of course; I say that
with the assumption that you would not play as a "Klingon".
meaning if you don't show promise in
your first cards-at the flop: then you shouldn't be in anyway.
This is for playing at a table of no more than 6 players.
You can figure as a general rule of thumb that almost always the bigger
tables with as many as 10 players; will require a near-nuts
hand to take home the pot. That means with the 5
community cards already dealt: that to win the pot it is
likely you will need the best hand - or nearly the best possible
hand that can be expected using what is showing, and what you hold
in your hand. example: the first three
community cards dealt (called the flop) are ace, king and
ten of spades. the next community card is an 8 of hearts,
and the last card (called the river) shows a 4 of clubs.
That means the "nuts" or best hand possible; would be a
flush. A straight is likely to have been filled for someone
if not the flush; so those are the two hands I would
think are likely to win that scenario. Anything else;
on a table of ten players; is going to be weak at best.
a
lot of it is learning how to recognize
the "personality" of the table; for instance; if the last 3 hands
were won by a no more than 3 of a kind; mostly 2 pairs etc; and say in between
each on of those wins; was a winner that won by default (most especially if they
were the same person nearly every time); odds are that guy/girl is bluffing
80% of the time.
a smart player will bet more heavily
with a weak hand; and lag back with a really good hand; in hopes of keeping
more people in the game.
usually by river time; everybody
that's in is going to stay in and those getting out are out; so at that time the
really good hand will raise (hopefully at the end of the call): some people do
what I call "ambushing" which is also known as check-raise": I
personally feel that is "trailer-park" poker; but I've always prided
myself on stating that I could play any game; as long as I know the rules before we
start and they stay the same to the end. So since
check-raising is allowed in poker, it must be an accepted part of
the game. Also, it is considered a normal part of poker in
some parts of the world, however, where I am from; if
you were playing at a friend's house and tried that; he'd
bounce you out on your ear. lol (a term you'll see a lot at the
friendlier poker rooms meaning.... laugh out loud.
